ST. GEORGE — Scammers are targeting utility customers by threatening to shut off utilities unless residents pay up, St. George City says.
WIthin the last several months, St. George residents have received calls from scammers under the guise of city representatives demanding credit card or money order payment for supposed unpaid utilities, St. George representatives said.
"We do not call people. All disconnect notices and so forth are done through the mail," said Philip Peterson, St. George City finance director. "The City of St. George will never call and threaten to shut off utilities and ask for payment in this manner."
The scammers are threatening to shut off utilities for late payment, though of the customers targeted, none have had outstanding utility bills, Peterson said.
As of Friday, the city was unaware of any customers sending money to the scammers.
Peterson said the city will only accept credit card payment from a customer in person at the city hall after utilities have been shut off.
Anyone who receives a suspicious phone call from someone claiming to be a city representative is asked to call the city at 435-627-4000 or 435-627-4700 during regular business hours.
