SANDY — "Star Wars" fans can simulate their own Kessel Run this weekend at Megaplex Theaters at Jordan Commons.
A replica of the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon has landed in the movie theater’s parking lot to promote the new movie “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which opens next weekend. The theater also has set up some trivia games, live music and a bounce house to commemorate the event.
“It’s a whole festival,” said Lucasfilm representative Aaron Evans, who helped coordinate the event.
The Falcon is on display Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the theater. Tickets to see it are free but are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The first tickets were given out at 8 a.m. Friday, but fans started lining up to see it before then, Evans said. At least 1,000 people had already visited the Falcon by 1 p.m. Friday, he said, and even more were expected on Saturday and Sunday.
The replica was made from the same molds that were used to make “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” Evans said.
“It looks exactly like what you’ve seen in the movies over all these years,” he said. “You can totally picture Han Solo and Chewie in the Millennium Falcon.”
Brothers Jake and Tom Laney said the cockpit replica was accurate and seemed like it could fly across the whole galaxy.
“It made you feel like you could pilot the Millennium Falcon,” Jake Laney said.
Marilee Laney said her expectations were very high, but they were redeemed when she got to see the inside of the cockpit.
“It was more impressive than I thought,” she said.
Part of the Falcon replica that was scheduled to be in Sandy got damaged on the way from Atlanta to Los Angeles, Evans said. The Hologame table was part of the original display, but was damaged by a forklift.
Even without that piece, people could still sit in the seats of the spaceship and snap pictures, Evans said.
“It’s a whole interactive experience,” he said. “People can pretend they’re driving or flying the Millennium Falcon.”
