AMERICAN FORK — A 10-year-old girl remained in critical condition Thursday after she slammed into a moving car while on her bike on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The girl was riding her bike about 5:50 p.m. Wednesday when she entered the intersection at 560 W. 1120 North, American Fork Police Lt. Josh Christensen said.

She hit the side of a moving car that was passing through the area, Christensen said.

The girl was wearing a helmet, but had a head injury and was taken to American Fork Hospital in critical condition, Christensen said. She was then airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, he added.

As of Thursday morning, the girl was still in critical condition. Christensen did not identify her.

Police aren’t sure why the girl entered the intersection, Christensen added. He did not know if she was riding by herself or if she was with friends.

It did not appear that the driver was at fault in any way, Christensen said. Excessive speed was not a factor in the crash. The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative with police, he added.

The crash took place on a main residential road in a 25 mile-per-hour zone.

No other information about the crash was available Thursday.

Editor's note: Police initially said the girl was not wearing a helmet during the crash, but later said she was and it came off her head. Police also initially said the crash happened at 5 p.m., but later said it happened shortly before 6 p.m. This story has been updated to reflect those details.
