BOISE — Law enforcement arrested the so-called “Great Outdoors Bandit” on Sunday — who is accused of robbing six Idaho banks and one Utah Bank — when he attempted to flee to Belgium.
Daniel “Danny” Alfaro, was picked up on an arrest warrant at the Los Angeles International Airport while attempting to board a Wow Airlines flight to Brussels, Belgium, the Idaho Statesman reported.
Alfaro was fleeing after he was confronted by his siblings, who believed he had robbed the banks. A tearful argument erupted at the family home in Utah and Alfaro fled to California. He had been charged on Friday in Idaho on suspected bank robbery and an arrest warrant was issued.
Alfaro’s brother told law enforcement that on Aug. 5, Alfaro and his sister drove in a rental car from their residence in Los Angeles, California, to the family’s residence in Utah, according to the criminal complaint. On the morning of Aug. 7, Alfaro borrowed his mother’s black Mitsubishi Outlander, left the residence in Utah, and did not return until two days later, according to the criminal complaint.
On Thursday morning, Alfaro argued with his sisters and cried when his brother learned that the argument was initiated by Alfaro’s sisters confronting Alfaro about the bank surveillance photographs seen in the media.
Alfaro then drove back to California in the rental car, where he was eventually picked up at the airport.
On Monday, Alfaro had his initial court appearance and arraignment before the U.S. Magistrate Court for the Central District of California. Alfaro was arrested and will be transported back to Idaho for trial.
