PROVO — A man who went to a Provo park Thursday for a sexual encounter with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl instead was met by law enforcement officers and arrested, police said.

Jason Wayne Jones, 37, of Ogden, was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of enticing, soliciting or luring a minor by internet or text, and dealing in harmful materials to a minor.

Jones began talking online with undercover police in mid-September, said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The Department of Homeland Security, Utah Valley Special Victims Task Force and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force collaborated on the case.

"Jones arranged to meet who he believed was a 13-year-old girl," Cannon said. "When he arrived at a park in Provo with the intentions of having sexual relations with that girl, Jones was arrested. … The girl in this case was actually an undercover detective."

Jones' bail is set at $10,000 cash.

Jones was released from prison in March following a five-year sentence for sexual battery, according to Cannon. He served his full sentence and was not on parole, but he is a registered sex offender in Utah, according to the sergeant.
