SALT LAKE CITY — When the rain started to change to snow Wednesday, UDOT plows went to work.
With holiday travel part of the plan for so many people, UDOT will use as many as 300 plows Wednesday night across northern Utah and will keep at it as long as the snow keeps coming down into the morning hours.
Once the temperature dropped in the mountains, several inches piled up pretty quickly. North of Salt Lake, snow started to arrive during the evening commute.

Plow driver Shawn Wright started pushing snow midafternoon in Little Cottonwood Canyon. After a couple of hours, nearly half a foot had fallen, and some cars struggled to stay on the road.
As conditions worsened, Wright told dispatch and UDOT to restrict the canyons to vehicles with four-wheel drive or chains on their tires.
"The main goal is to get everybody out of the canyon safely," he said.

Further north, a few inches slickened the roads in Davis and Weber counties, but motorists seemed to be cautious while driving.
Utahns seem to be enjoying the winter weather on the eve of Thanksgiving.
