PREVIOUSLY SERVED: As president and chief executive officer of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank, one of the Fed's 12 district banks. Before that, chairwoman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Bill Clinton and chairwoman of the economic policy committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND: Served as professor of business and economics at the University of California, Berkeley, 1980 to 1994. Also served on the faculty of the London School of Economics and Harvard University.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in economics from Brown University, Ph.D. in economics from Yale University.
PERSONAL: Married to George Akerlof, a Nobel prize-winning economist and a professor at Berkeley. One son, Robert Akerlof.
