(AP) - PLAN APPROVED: A federal judge approved the plan under which American Airlines parent AMR Corp. would merge with US Airways and then exit bankruptcy protection. It filed for Chapter 11 help in November 2011.
THE CATCH: The plan won't take effect unless American gets government approval for the merger, which it doesn't have yet. The U.S. Justice Department and seven states are suing to block the deal, saying it would hurt competition and drive up prices.
NEXT STEP: A trial on the anti-merger lawsuit is scheduled to start Nov. 25. If AMR wins that case or reaches a settlement with the Justice Department, the merger goes ahead and, eventually, the US Airways brand goes away.
