CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposed tax plan has passed its first hurdle.
Senators voted 4-3 to pass the governor's proposal to raise business license fees on Tuesday during a Senate Revenue and Economic Development Committee meeting.
Republicans on the committee voted unanimously for the bill but Democratic Sen. Aaron Ford voted no and said lawmakers needed more time to garner input from constituents. The bill now moves to the Senate.
The governor's proposal is detailed in SB 252 and would restructure the state's flat business license fee into a tiered system with rates ranging from $400 to $4 million annually. Sandoval said the plan would raise around $437 million over two years to help fund K-12 education.
Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson has led hours of hearings vetting the bill over the last two weeks.
