SALT LAKE CITY — A man who was arrested Friday after he was charged with sexually abusing a woman he met through a dating website last year made his first appearance in 3rd District Court on Tuesday, according to court records.
Javier Enrique Uribe Garavito, 44, of West Valley City, was charged on Sept. 10 with forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony, as well as three counts of forcible sexual abuse, all second-degree felony counts, and a class B misdemeanor count of theft in relation to an incident that reportedly happened on Christmas Eve 2018, court records show.
Charging documents weren’t clear as to when the investigation began, but a woman told West Valley City officers she had met Uribe through a dating website and they had become “intimate partners” until she discovered Uribe was married. During that conversation at her parents’ home, “(Uribe) told (the woman) that she was his and that she will always be his,” the charging documents stated.
It added that Uribe then pushed the woman against a couch and tried to kiss her, but she stated “no.” At some point during the encounter, the woman told police Uribe pulled down his pants and sexually abused her, the document continued.
The document also stated that after the incident Uribe left with the woman’s parents’ keys and never returned them. The parents changed the locks and had to have their vehicles towed to a dealership so their keys could be reprogrammed.
The incident was reported to a sexual assault nurse examiner, according to the charging document.
Salt Lake County jail records show Uribe was arrested on Friday after a warrant was filed for his arrest when charges were filed. During Tuesday’s court appearance, a scheduling conference was scheduled for next week.
Uribe has no previous criminal history in Utah, according to court records. However, jail records show he was also being held for a federal agency. The court docket stated it was for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Further details about his legal status in the country weren’t immediately available.
