The Utah Dental Hygienists Association offers mobile dental hygiene care to seniors in nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and for those who are homebound. Poor oral health can lead to overall health problems and can complicate diabetes, dementia, and heart conditions. Helping seniors care for their teeth enhances their quality of life. The Utah Dental Hygienists Association works with caregivers and residents to educate them on the importance of oral health. The seniors are screened and an assessment is made to ensure their dental needs are met. Care is given by portable dental equipment on a regular schedule depending on the need. The benefit of having mobile dental care for seniors is invaluable. If dental care does not come to them, many may have no access to dental care at all. Utah has the 6th fastest growing senior population in the United States and this program directly benefits many of those seniors. SelectHealth recognizes the life changing services provided by the Utah Dental Hygienists Association as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
