NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The University of New Orleans has named Blake Dean as the Privateers' baseball coach.

Dean, a former standout player for LSU, takes over for Ron Maestri, who retired at the end of the 2015 season.

The 27-year-old Dean says it's an honor to accept his first head coaching job with New Orleans, where he's spent two seasons as hitting coach.

Dean says he wants "to put a fence around New Orleans" as he aims to keep the area's top players near home.

UNO Athletic Director Derek Morel says the Privateers are pleased to have a coach who was mentored by both Maestri, the most successful baseball coach in UNO history, and LSU coach Paul Mainieri, who won the 2009 College World Series with Dean in his lineup.
