TOKYO (AP) — Roman Gonzalez of Nicaragua captured the WBC flyweight title when he beat Akira Yaegashi of Japan by technical knockout in the ninth round on Friday.
Gonzalez dominated Yaegashi, putting him down the first time in round three. After the second knock down in the ninth, with an uppercut, the referee stopped the bout.
Gonzalez improved to 40-0 with 34 knockouts, while Yaegashi dropped to 20-4 with 10 KOs.
Gonzalez has also won the WBA light flyweight minimumweight titles.
Also, Naoya Inoue of Japan beat Samartlek Kokietgym of Thailand by technical knockout in the 11th round in the first defense of his WBC light flyweight title. Inoue improved to 7-0 with six knockouts. Kokietgym fell to 17-5 with five KOs.
