SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's elections office has rejected a proposed initiative petition to impose term limits on those appointed to serve on hundreds of state boards and commissions.
Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox, whose office oversees elections, said Thursday that the proposed petition from the group Utah Term Limits Now is unconstitutional.
In a letter rejecting the application, Cox says Utah's constitution specifically gives the governor the ability to make those appointments and any effort to limit that must involve changing the state constitution.
Rick B. Larsen, an organizer with Utah Term Limits Now, says he's seeking a clarification about the ruling and may consider legal action.
His group is also working on a separate effort to get state lawmakers next year to impose term limits on Utah's governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, auditor and treasurer.
