SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. Attorney's Office for Utah collected $5.8 million related to criminal and civil cases the past fiscal year.
The office is responsible for enforcing and collecting civil and criminal debts owed the U.S. government and restitution owed federal crime victims.
“During this time of economic recovery, these collections are more important than ever,” U.S. Attorney for Utah David B. Barlow said in a news release. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to protecting the public and recovering funds for the federal treasury and for victims of federal crime. We will also continue to hold accountable those who seek to profit from their illegal activities.”
Of the total collected in Utah for the 2011 fiscal year ended Sept. 30, civil actions accounted for $3.6 million, while criminal actions amounted to $2.2 million.
In addition, the office seized $4.1 million in assets — including those that are being sold, paid as restitution to crime victims, destroyed such as guns and computers, and shared with local police agencies that participated in asset forfeiture cases.
Nationwide, U.S. attorneys’ offices collected $6.5 billion in criminal and civil cases in fiscal 2011, surpassing $6 billion for the second straight year.
