SALT LAKE CITY -- Unlicensed contractors are crowding the construction industry, undercutting legitimate businesses and often producing shoddy results.
The Division of Professional Licensing says it's partially seasonal, but partially due to the sagging economy.
"The economy brings that out in contractors because bidding out there is either nonexistent or it's very tight," says Dave Stanley, director of the Division of Professional Licensing.
He says contractors, both legitimate and not so legitimate, don't have a lot of opportunity coming to them.
Many are trying to generate business by posting fliers and the like.
Stanley says before you hire anyone, get at least two bids. You can also check their Web site to make sure the contractor is working legally in Utah. And, Stanley says you should always get everything in writing.
