SALT LAKE CITY — A tip from cyber police in Italy led to a federal indictment charging a Sandy man with possessing child pornography.
Federal authorities received information from the National Center for Combating Pedophilia Online about a website offering access to pornographic photos and videos of children. The center is a division of the Italian State Police and Communication Service.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Virginia accessed the site and found hyperlinks allowing users to view and post pornographic images. Many were nude and sexually explicit photos of minors, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court.
Agents traced web access logs from the site to the IP address assigned to David A. Shewell, the complaint said.
Armed with a search warrant, authorities say they found a "large amount of child pornographic videos and still images on the hard drive" of Shewell's computer. They say they also found CDs with the same types of images in Shewell's brief case.
A federal grand jury indicted Shewell, 46, on one count of possession of child pornography.
