MURRAY — Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Murray early Saturday morning.
Just before 1 a.m., an Adult Probation and Parole officer was on duty in his vehicle participating in a Metro Gang Unit operation in the area of 4500 South and Main Street, when a car pulled up next to him at a stoplight, said Maria Peterson, spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Corrections.
Peterson said the suspect, who was the passenger in the vehicle, got out of the car, approached the agent's window and initiated an "aggressive confrontation," which eventually led the agent to fire shots at the suspect.
The suspect then got back into the vehicle and he and the driver fled, Peterson said. The driver later took the suspect to a hospital, where he admitted in critical condition.
Peterson said the suspect was on parole and the driver was on probation with the Utah Department of Corrections.
The driver was taken into custody on a $25,000 warrant, Peterson said.
The names of the suspect, the driver and the probation officer were not released Saturday.
According to protocol, the agent was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an officer-involved shooting investigation, Peterson said.
The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office is conducting the independent investigation in cooperation with the Utah Department of Correction's Law Enforcement Bureau, Peterson said.
