SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake Community College officials say summer enrollment is booming, up by 12 percent, or 1,200 students, over last year.

College spokesman Joy Tlou says students are rushing to sign up for health science programs and technical training in "green jobs" such as solar panel installation and natural gas conversion.

Tlou says the numbers continue a growth trend. Enrollment rose by 4 percent in the fall and 8 percent in spring 2009. Tlou says rising enrollment could be a reflection of a bleak economy because students often seek additional job training and skills.

As of Thursday, 11,394 students had enrolled in summer courses -- likely a summer record for the 60-year-old multi-campus school that provides two-year degrees along with technical and career training.
