SALT LAKE CITY — One person was shot and killed by police in Salt Lake City Friday evening as officers responded to a home in the Ballpark neighborhood.

Police received a report of a person with a weapon near 150 W. Lucy Avenue just after 6:30 p.m. The 911 caller told police a man was possibly suicidal, brandishing a weapon to a neighbor and had a handgun in his waistband, police said in a statement.

Officers arrived at the home, but the man had gone back inside the house and closed the door.

"Shortly after this, the man came out the front door of the house with a gun. Four officers shot at the man. He was struck and died on scene," Salt Lake police said in a statement.

Police did not provide additional details about what led up to the shooting.

The man's identity has not been released. No one else was injured, police said.

The officers involved were placed on administrative leave per protocol, and an independent investigation will be conducted by West Valley police.
