HURRICANE — One person is dead, and another is in critical condition, following a crash Friday involving three vehicles and a motorcycle on state Route 59 southeast of Hurricane.
The accident occurred near mile marker 14 when a vehicle traveling east "attempted an improper pass, which caused a collision between three vehicles and a motorcycle," said Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden.
According to a release from the Utah Department of Public Safety, an "unknown" black passenger car was driving eastbound, passing traffic in oncoming lanes at a high rate of speed. Then, a gold Chevy Avalanche heading westbound swerved onto the right shoulder to avoid the black car, overcorrected and slid across the highway into oncoming traffic.

The third vehicle, a Chevy Malibu, swerved to the right to avoid the Chevy Avalanche, but was struck on the driver's side, killing the driver, before rolling down an embankment.
A motorcyclist traveling east swerved to miss the collision, brushing a Jeep Wrangler, before rolling.
Roden said the person who died was initially taken from the scene by medical helicopter.
"That was a vehicle that ended up rolling during the collision and that driver has passed away at the hospital," Roden said.
In total, four people were transported from the scene, with two who had injuries not considered to be life-threatening. Roden added that the motorcyclist was the one critically injured in the crash.
Roden also said authorities are working to try and identify the black vehicle.
The eastbound lane was closed while the crash was cleared.
