HERRIMAN — Police said one person was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Mountain View Corridor Friday morning.

The crash occurred about 4:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes just south of Real Vista Drive in Herriman, according to Herriman Police Cmdr. Brent Adamson. A man who was the sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said another driver called the crash in after witnessing the car drive by them at a high rate of speed. The caller did not see the crash occur but came upon the crash site farther down the road.

Investigators estimate the driver was traveling over 100 mph where the posted speed limit was 55 mph.

"We always advise that people drive the speed limit," said Herriman Police Sgt. Josh Jennings. "They've been designated for a particular reason. (They're) to keep people safe and to avoid accidents like this."

High speeds are a problem on the roadway, according to drivers who use it regularly. KSL-TV spoke with Herriman resident Debra Howick who said people "just want to get to wherever they're going and the consequences just don't matter."

Herriman resident Andre Eian added that he tries to stick to the 55-mph speed limit but cars frequently catch up to and pass him.

"You can either add more lanes and raise the speed limit and call it freeway," he said, "or you can be harsher on the crackdown."

All southbound lanes of the highway were closed at Real Vista Drive for several hours while police investigated the crash. The roadway reopened by 10 a.m.

Police did not release the identity of the driver who was killed Friday.
