HURRICANE, Washington County — Officials identified a 71-year-old man from Nevada who drowned at Sand Hollow State Park Wednesday.
Jimmie Hilton, of Las Vegas, was fishing with a friend about 5 p.m. when he stepped off the dock to get into his boat and fell into the water, said Utah State Parks spokesman Eugene Swalberg.
Hilton attempted to keep his head above water but was unable to do so, Swalberg said. Bystanders pulled Hilton from the water and performed CPR on the man until medical personnel arrived to assist.
Efforts to resuscitate Hilton were unsuccessful, however, and Hilton was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Our thoughts are with the friends and family of those involved in this tragedy. We ask that everyone remember to take appropriate safety measures when out recreating this season. Always wear your life jacket and follow safe boating practices when around the water," Swalberg said in an emailed statement.
