MILLCREEK — A man was arrested Monday after police say he drove on the sidewalk twice in an effort to hit his pregnant girlfriend.

Maverick Seumanu, 30, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of attempted murder and attempted kidnapping.

Unified police were called to the area of Tanner Park, near 2700 East and 2800 South, by witnesses who said Seumanu "was in a vehicle and drove on the sidewalk in an attempt to run the victim over. The victim had to jump out of the way to avoid being run over and ran to two different houses begging for help," according to a police booking affidavit.

The woman is three to four months pregnant, police said. As she was running away, Seumanu caught up with her, "put her in a chokehold and attempted to drag her into the vehicle. The victim again escaped and ran west. The subject again drove onto the sidewalk and attempted to run the victim over and she again had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit," the affidavit states.

When officers spotted the couple, they said the woman refused to cooperate.

"The subject and victim were uncooperative with the investigation but two independent witnesses observed the crimes and stated the subject drove onto the sidewalk and attempted to run the victim over twice," according to the affidavit.

Semanu is a habitual domestic violence offender with "a violent history," police wrote in the arrest report. Officers requested that he be held in the Salt Lake County Jail without bail pending formal charges being filed.
