WEST VALLEY CITY — A fire that completely destroyed an office building was started by a floating, burning object, officials said Thursday.

The fire at Nemko, located at 1940 W. Alexander St. in West Valley City, started at about 9:37 p.m. Saturday. Investigators said they determined the floating object, which smoldered on the roof for almost five hours, caused the fire after talking to witnesses and looking at surveillance video.

In a video released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, a small floating object in the top right corner of the frame can be seen drifting onto the building's roof. The resulting fire caused an estimated $3 million worth of damage.

"This is an unusual situation," ATF special agent in charge Ken Croke said in a news release. "We hope someone out there knows what happened and comes forward with relevant information as to what this object might be, as well as who might be involved."

A $10,000 reward is being offered by the ATF and West Valley Fire Department for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the fire. Those with information about the incident can contact the ATF by calling 1-888-283-3473.
