SALT LAKE COUNTY — Police and fire authorities are investigating a rash of brush fires that broke out in Draper, Herriman and Lehi as possible arson.
The fires were reported within an hour of each other Sunday morning, fire officials said.
A fire in Herriman was reported first, shortly after 8 a.m, near 7400 W. Rose Canyon. At 9 a.m., crews were then called to another field fire near the Suncrest Trailhead in Draper, at 15547 Minuteman Drive.
Then, at 10 a.m., firefighters were called to another brush fire on Minuteman Drive near the Point of the Mountain.
Five homes were threatened in Draper, the blaze burning about 100 feet away, said Unified Fire Authority Capt. Dan Brown. Residents of the homes were evacuated, he said, but they were allowed back in their homes shortly after crews gained control of the blazes.
The fires ranged from about an acre in Herriman and Draper to 7 acres in Lehi, fire officials said. Crews were able to contain all of them by Sunday afternoon.
No injures or structural damages were reported.
But now, Brown said arson investigators are looking for leads.
"They all seem suspicious," he said. "They were all at the south end of the valley, all within an hour of each other."
Brown urged anyone who might have seen strange activity within the area of the fires — like vehicles speeding away — to call Unified Fire Authority dispatch at 801-840-4000.
"Everybody keep your eyes open and help us find this person," he said.
