HEBER CITY — Evacuations have been lifted after two wildfires broke out in Wasatch County Sunday, national forest officials said Monday.
Officials initially believed the Soldier Creek Fire had burned 600 acres, but Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest officials said Monday the burned area is much smaller than first thought. They said the Soldier Creek Fire has burned 143 acres and is 40 percent contained.
About 25 people were temporarily evacuated as a result of the fire, Wasatch County Fire Lt. Janet Carson said on Sunday.
Fire officials said at least five fires sparked along a 10-mile stretch of U.S. 40 on Sunday. The cause of those fires wasn't immediately known, though forest officials tweeted they were likely human-caused.
Jason Curry, Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands spokesman, said crews have been stretched thin because it is late in the year and some crews were also dispatched to fight the deadly wildfires in northern California.
Utah Fire Info reports there have been 884 wildfires that have started in Utah this year, burning more than 221,000 acres.
