PROVO — Evacuations at several restaurants, businesses and a nearby hotel have been lifted after a gas leak in downtown Provo Wednesday.
The gas leak occurred near Freedom Boulevard and Center Street, according to Provo Fire Battalion Chief Lynn Schofield. Provo fire officials closed Center Street from 300 West to 100 North and Freedom Boulevard from 100 North to 100 South for about three hours in the morning.
All roads reopened about 2 p.m. except westbound Center Street, Schofield said. All roads in downtown Provo were reopened by 4:30 p.m., Provo police officials reported on Twitter.
Authorities evacuated a dozen people from the building in front of the gas leak, as well as several restaurants, and the Marriott Hotel at 101 W. 100 North.
"Occasionally, you get one of these (gas leaks) that goes bad, and when it goes bad, it goes really bad," Schofield explained. "We appreciate people's cooperation."
Dominion Energy and Questar Gas are working to fix the leak. The cause of the leak has not yet been released. No injuries have been reported.
