DAVIS COUNTY -- Janitors, cafeteria workers and secretaries in the Davis School District soon could be required to pay for criminal background checks.
All Utah school district are required to do background checks on all of their employees, not just teachers.
Currently it's common for teachers to pay for their own checks. But the Standard-Examiner reports the Davis District is discussing making all the other employees -- including bus drivers, janitors, and lunch workers -- pay for their background checks as well.
Michelle Beus, the district's legal issue specialist, says the cost for a background check for classified employees is $30. The cost for teachers and other licensed employees is $69. The background checks are required every six years.
The district has also discussed requiring volunteers who spend a lot of unsupervised time with students get checked, but the school would pay for those.
The paper reports the changes likely will be approved at a later school board meeting.
