FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) -- The Utah state court system is phasing out court reporters in favor of digital recordings of courtroom proceedings.
The decision was made by a policy-making panel led by Chief Justice Christine Durham.
The Administrative Office of the Courts says replacing the stenography of court reporters for recordings is part of a cost-cutting plan to help balance the state budget.
The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reports the decision will throw 18 court reporters out of work starting in June.
Lawyers and county attorneys are up in arms. They say court reporters can produce a more accurate record of courtroom proceedings that sometimes inaudible recordings.
