CENTERVILLE — One woman was killed in an apartment fire in Centerville on Wednesday evening.
The fire started at an apartment complex near 88 West and 50 South around 8 p.m. Firefighters say a woman who was inside the apartment where the blaze began did not make it out alive, although they haven't publicly identified the victim.
Dana Boren, who lives two doors down from the unit where the fire started, said she was walking her dog and noticed the flames. She told her husband to call 911 and described pounding on the doors of neighboring units to warn their neighbors.
"It was just frightening," Boren said. "The windows and the glass, and hearing it hiss and finally scream and break, and then the flames flying out."
"It's not like it's portrayed in the movies," said Paul Boren, Dana's husband.
The Borens are out of their home Wednesday night while investigators continue to try to identify the source of the fire and stop the flames from spreading to other units. Multiple other families were evacuated.
"With these types of units we want to make sure we don't get extensions of the smoke and the fire into adjoining units," said Matt Shupe with South Davis Metro Fire. "If we can minimize the amount of damage we can get people back into their homes."
