CEDAR CITY — A Canyon View Middle School student was in critical condition after authorities believe she was hit by two vehicles while walking on Interstate 15 in Cedar City. Lt. Cam Roden with Utah Highway Patrol said the accident happened at 8:38 a.m. Friday near exit 59. The Department of Public Safety later confirmed that the girl was hit by two vehicles, and one of them did not stop. Utah Highway Patrol was searching for that vehicle. The other vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperating with police, the department said. On Friday afternoon, Shauna Lund, communications director and foundation coordinator for the Iron County School District, confirmed the girl was a student at Canyon View Middle School. The student's identity was not released at the time of publication. The freeway was closed traveling northbound in the area for approximately two hours. It reopened at approximately 11 a.m. A helicopter was seen landing on the freeway, and Roden said the girl had been airlifted to a hospital. Utah Highway Patrol was launching an investigation into the accident. "Our heart goes out to the family, staff and students affected by this tragic accident," Lund said in a statement. The Department of Public Safety said the girl crossed a fence and walked onto the freeway. Investigators were working to determine why. A support team will be present at Canyon View Middle School and Canyon View High School on Monday, Lund said. Counselors and therapists would be available for students and staff members if needed throughout Friday and the upcoming week.
