SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah School of Medicine welcomed a new class of students Friday with the ritual White Coat Ceremony.

Members of the class of 2013 received their white coats as a symbol of their start in the School of Medicine. Cecil O. Samuelson, former dean of the School of Medicine and current president of Brigham Young University, spoke to the new students.

Samuelson spoke of the white coat and its symbolism. He also briefly mentioned the current debate on health care and the changing environment of the medical profession.

"While I don't have any sure understanding of the exact result of the current commotion, or legislation that will emerge, I do know that some things will be very different for you and for the people of this nation," Samuelson said.

Classes for the new students begin next week.
