BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (AP) -- Box Elder County residents have voted to repeal the sale of a landfill to a multi-county board.
The Northern Utah Regional Landfill Authority wanted to spend $10 million to buy the landfill and expand it to take in garbage from five counties -- Box Elder, Weber, Cache, Davis and Morgan.
After the Box Elder County Commission voted to sell the landfill, a citizens group opposed to the plan collected signatures and put the issue on the ballot.
County residents voted 9,795 to 7,948 on Tuesday to repeal the sale of the Little Mountain landfill to the regional landfill authority, which is made up of elected officials from the five counties.
An authority board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 18 to look at options going forward. Those include dissolving the authority or looking at other possible sites.
