JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Dr. David Walker will be the new director of the veterans' hospital in Jackson.

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced Friday that Walker had been appointed leader of the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Medical Center. Walker will also oversee seven clinics in Mississippi.

Raised in Clinton and Vicksburg, Walker is a psychiatrist who earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He's worked at a veterans' hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, since 2009, rising to associate chief of staff for ambulatory care.

Walker replaces Joe Battle, who had led Jackson hospital since 2012. Battle sought to improve the hospital, which had been troubled by complaints about quality of care, but some complaints continued during his tenure.

Battle now leads a larger VA hospital in Tampa, Florida.
