FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in a coastal Florida county are investigating the shooting of a motorist by a Fort Pierce police officer.

Deputy Bryan Beaty, the public information officer for the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, says the officer shot and killed the motorist.

Fort Pierce Police Department asked the sheriff's office to investigate the incident. The shooting took place sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
