LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A former Arkansas official and a former probation officer have been sentenced after pleading guilty in federal court to participating in a bribery scheme involving a juvenile mental health provider.
U.S. District Judge Billy Roy Wilson on Thursday sentenced former Department of Human Services deputy director Steven Jones to 30 months in prison and a $6,000 fine. Phillip Carter, who was a probation officer in Crittenden County and a former West Memphis councilman, was sentenced to 24 months in prison.
Authorities say Jones solicited cash and gifts from mental health provider Ted Suhl. Prosecutors allege that the money was paid through Carter and a pastor in exchange for information and actions benefiting Suhl's business.
Suhl has pleaded not guilty to a federal bribery charge.
