RENO, Nev. (AP) — Cigarettes are now costing Nevada residents an extra dollar per pack due to a new tax that passed in the legislature this year.
KTVN-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1C0cDRL ) the cigarette tax was put into effect Wednesday.
Tom McCoy, with the American Cancer Society, says the extra $1 per pack is expected to reduce the state's smoking population by four percent over the next few years. The new tax is also expected to prevent about 10,000 kids from starting the habit.
But some smokers say the new tax is too high and that it may actually force them to quit.
McCoy says the money raised from the tax is expected to go toward anti-smoking education.
