SCOTT SIGNS CUT IN ANNUAL CAR FEES

Motor vehicle title and registration fees will go down in September under a bill signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott. Scott signed the bill Wednesday and made it clear the issue will become part of his campaign against former Gov. Charlie Crist.

HOUSE APPROVES BILL TO ALLOW GUNS IN SCHOOLS

A House committee has approved a bill that would allow trained officials to carry firearms in schools as a way to improve safety. The bill approved Wednesday is sponsored by Greg Steube, a Republican from Sarasota. It gives schools the option to appoint former or current law enforcement officers and former or current military officers with state legislated training to carry firearms on campus.

FLORIDA HOUSE GIVES TENTATIVE APPROVAL TO NEW BUDGET

The Florida House is giving tentative approval to a nearly $75.3 billion state budget. The House spent several hours discussing the budget on Wednesday. A vote is expected Thursday. The Florida Senate is expected to take up a rival nearly $75 billion spending plan this week as well. State legislators have until early May to pass a final budget.

FLORIDA LOTTERY SUSPENDS SALES AT 3 LOCATIONS

The Florida Lottery has suspended the sale of its products at three South Florida stores after officials say an investigation found evidence of fraud. A Lottery news release on Wednesday announced the suspension of Akel Market, Georgia Market and Kwik Stop Food Store, all three of which are located in Pompano Beach.

COAST GUARD RESPONDS TO BOAT FIRE

U.S. Coast Guard crews taking place in a mock drill on Wednesday involving a fire on a ship were instead diverted to an emergency on a boat some 50 miles off of Fernandina Beach. Five people were aboard the 70-foot Belle-Amie when the fire broke out. They extinguished it but the boat starting taking on water. No injuries were reported.
