SALT LAKE CITY -- A former Utah Jazz basketball player is in the Salt Lake County Jail.
A Unified Police Department detective was patrolling near 3900 South and 700 West and saw people in a car with its lights off in an apartment complex parking lots at 4:30 a.m.
When asked for identification the people in the vehicle gave fake names, but one of the officers recognized the 6' 10" Whaley as a former center for the Jazz.
Detectives then saw Whaley had an extraditable warrant out from Michigan.
As Whaley was being booked into jail, officers found several bags of marijuana on his person.
"He was hiding it," the officer said. "Apparently it wasn't in a pocket."
According to jail documents, he was holding the marijuana "between his buttocks."
Whaley was convicted in 2008 of running a drug house in Michigan. The Deseret News reports that because officials there may want to extradite Whaley, the charges of providing false identification to police and drug possession will likely be dropped in favor of the more serious Michigan charges.
The Utah Jazz drafted Whaley in 2005 but traded him in 2006.
