AMERICAN FORK -- An American Fork man admitted in court that he practiced dentistry without a license in his basement.
According to the Deseret News, Raul Garay, 57, appeared in 4th District Court Tuesday and pleaded guilty to two counts of practicing dentistry without a license and one count of unlawfully dispensing prescriptions.
Judge Steven Hansen sentenced Garay to 36 months of probation and 240 hours of community service.
Garay was arrested in October. Police found rusty tools, a dental chair and an X-ray machine in his home. They say he performed procedures on as many as seven patients a week for up to $600 per procedure. They say Garay had advertised dental services in several Hispanic markets.
The Deseret News reports if he successfully completes his probation, Garay could ask to have the charges reduced to misdemeanors. That means he could obtain a license to work in the field legally in the future.
