SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Anyone arrested for a violent felony in Utah would have a DNA sample taken under a bill the Utah Senate has approved.

Under the measure sponsored by Sen. Stuart Adams, a Layton Republican, the evidence wouldn't be processed until the person accused of the crime is bound over for trial, waives a preliminary hearing or a grand jury issues an indictment.

If someone is cleared of a crime they would have to request their name and DNA be removed from the state's database.

Senate Bill 277 was approved Monday 23-1. It now advances to the House.
