SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's governor says leaked documents from the department of the interior are going to be on the top of his agenda in Washington, D.C., next week.
What Gov. Gary Herbert told Utah's Morning News is he doesn't want is another 1996. That's when President Clinton surprised Utah with Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
"It does make you just a little bit concerned that there may be something in the back rooms going that we don't know about," Herbert said. "Those who are most going to be impacted ought to at least have some share at the time, some discussion. It ought not to be some kind of a midnight surprise."
The leaked documents named two Utah locations, the San Rafael Swell in Emery County and Cedar Mesa region in San Juan County, as possible future national monuments.
Herbert will sit down with the Secretary of the Interior next week.
