SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The number of mammograms women are getting at several Utah hospitals is down.

Screening mammograms at six MountainStar hospitals in Utah are down 22 percent on average. The number was down 14 percent in January over the same month a year ago at Intermountain Healthcare's hospitals statewide.

While health officials say there is always a slight drop around this time of year, they also say a bad economy and last fall's recommendation that women postpone mammograms until age 50 are likely behind the decline.

Mammography technologist Loy Hunt says workers at Logan Regional Hospital were in on Presidents Day last year because there was a backlog of women seeking the screening. This year she says they took the day off because there are fewer women trying to get appointments.
