SALT LAKE CITY -- Jay Hill, Utah's tight ends' coach for the past two years, is returning to his former duties with the cornerbacks, while Dave Schramm takes over at tight end, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham announced Thursday.
In other news, receivers coach Aaron Roderick has been elevated to co-offensive coordinator. Roderick will share coordinator duties with Schramm.
The position changes were precipitated by the departure of cornerbacks coach J.D. Williams and the appointment of Brian Johnson—the winningest quarterback in school history and the 2008 Mountain West Conference and Sugar Bowl MVP—as quarterbacks' coach.
"When we hired Brian (Johnson) to coach the quarterbacks, the intent was to assemble the best staff possible, rather than just filling the open position," explained Whittingham. "Jay (Hill) will move over to the defensive side of the ball and coach the cornerbacks, the position he excelled at as a player and coached his first two years on the staff. Dave (Schramm) can coach about any position on the field, which gave us some real flexibility on that front."
Hill, who coached Utah's cornerbacks in 2005 and 2006, will continue to serve as Utah's special teams' coordinator. In his first stint with the secondary, Hill mentored two-time MWC Defensive Player of the Year and 2006 Consensus All-America defensive back Eric Weddle
The versatile Schramm begins his third coaching assignment since joining the staff in 2005. He oversaw Utah's running backs and was the recruiting coordinator from 2005-08. In his first three years, Schramm coached two of the eight 1,000-yard rushers in Utah's 115-year football history. Last year, Schramm assumed the role of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks' coach, and helped develop true freshman Jordan Wynn into the Poinsettia Bowl Offensive MVP.
