SALT LAKE CITY (KSL News Services) -- The Utah Trucking Association says a semi crash and explosion along highway six is raising concerns about terrorism on the highways. Now, Utah truckers are trying to do their part for homeland security.
David Creer with the Utah Truckers Association says there's a national call center where truckers can report suspicious activity. That information will then be forwarded to Homeland Security and the T-S-A. So far, one thousand truckers have signed up for the program in Utah alone. ”It’s one of the more practical deterrents that we’ve seen after 9/11 for the security of our nation,” says Creer.
Drivers are now being trained to keep an eye out for terrorist activities. The trucking association is enlisting drivers to join its highway watch program. ”People on the road, professionals on the road who know what’s going on, let them be the eyes, let them see if there’s suspicious behavior,” he says.
A new F-B-I issued last week says members of Al Qaida may try to hijack fuel trucks in major cities to carry out their terrorist plans.
