SALT LAKE CITY -- The Sundance Film Festival's opening night is Thursday. Usually the festival premieres just one film, but this year it's three: a dramatic film, a documentary and a series of shorts.

There's also some star power expected for the premiere: Spider-Man star James Franco and Mad Men's Jon Hamm are expected to walk the red carpet.

But if you prefer films over stargazing, you're going to need tickets before you get to the theater.

"You sign up clear back in October, September, and wait for them to give you the ‘OK, you've got this,'" explains ticket holder Virginia Wirthlin.

Wirthlin lucked out this year. She got an early pickup time and was able to choose from a good selection of movies. This year, ticket managers say demand is up.

"It's definitely been a lot busier," says Jodi Johnson, associate manager of the festival box office in Salt Lake City.

They estimate they've helped 2,000 people in two days.

Still, if you're not in this line, you're not out of luck. Sundance will have "day of show" tickets as well. You can visit the box office after 8 p.m. the night before, or starting at 8:00 a.m. the day of the movie you're dying to see.

"They can try to snatch up tickets for the films that we released that day," Johnson says.
