SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A donor has given the University of Utah $30 million to build the state's first dental school.
But university officials say it would cost the state about $2 million a year to sustain a program. They say they may not try to build a program without a financial commitment from the state.
University President Michael Young told lawmakers last week that the university doesn't want to start a second-rate school. He said it would have to be integrated into the university's research mission and would require collaboration with the state.
University officials have declined to name the donor.
Officials have sent a proposal for a 70,000-square-foot building to the state Building Board with two potential locations, one on upper campus and one in Research Park.
