SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The University of Utah closed at noon Tuesday as heavy snow coated the region and turned roads into slippery, hazardous routes.

Classes were canceled and employees were sent home, with the exception of hospital workers and others providing essential services.

President Michael Young's announcement did not affect an evening basketball game between Utah and San Diego State.

"The university is expected to be fully operational on Wednesday," he said.

The storm started in northern Utah's Cache valley and moved south. Three inches to 8 inches were predicted, with much more in the mountains.
