SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A new law requiring the Utah Driver License Division to collect additional proof of citizenship is creating long waits -- nearly six hours in extreme cases -- at area offices.
The new law went into effect Jan. 1 and requires residents to provide birth certificates to prove they are legal citizens.
For more information you may visit our Positive Identification web page or call Customer Service at 801-965-4437 or toll free at 888-353-4224. Applications will not be processed without all the required documents.
Division staff also are dealing with a new computer system and signs at offices warn customers it is causing long delays.
Officials say the division is looking at measures to try to help manage the waits, including posting average wait times online.
